Small Ways I Add Whimsy to Our Days at Home

Whimsy comes from how you experience life. It lives in simple moments that add a little magic to ordinary days. I’ve always loved that whimsical feeling. My baby shower theme was storybook because I adore that essence—fairies, magic, wonder, beauty. The feeling of living inside a storybook where everything feels simple and nostalgic. I think of being wrapped in a warm blanket on a rainy day, surrounded by tiny, happy moments that come from the most heartfelt and ordinary places.

Naturally, babies are whimsical. They notice the things we often overlook—a small trail of ants, the trees moving in the wind, happily tugging on blades of grass we usually just step over.

Baking has always felt whimsical to me, even when I was a little girl. The baking games, the flour on the counter, the storybooks with tiny characters baking—it always felt comforting. The butter, the bowls, the chocolate. Baking is an escape from whatever is happening in my life. Julia Child helped me unleash my imagination in the kitchen, and now I get to share that joy with my baby, who absolutely loves watching what I’m doing.

These are a few of the ways I add a touch of whimsy to my motherhood ❤️

Baking With Baby

I recently reorganized my kitchen island. Instead of going into the pantry to gather ingredients, I decided to keep our main baking ingredients right in the center of the island. It has helped me so much. I simply strap the baby on, grab a bowl and a whisk, and we start baking.

Even spending a little time baking something small can instantly lift my mood, especially when the house fills with that warm baking smell. At the same time, my baby gets a sensory experience—smelling, touching, whisking, and observing everything that’s happening.

Open Windows to Listen to Birds (and Laundry)

Our house is surrounded by trees, which means we’re lucky to hear many birds throughout the day. During my baby’s first wake window, if the weather allows, I open the windows in the kitchen and living room. He sits and plays or eats breakfast with no music or TV—just the natural sounds from outside.

Another sound he surprisingly loves is the washing machine. A mixture of birds chirping and the laundry spinning nearby becomes a perfect little soundtrack. He’ll sit in his chair facing the laundry room and watches the clothes spin around.

Watering Our Garden

We have a small garden with vegetables and flowers that we water every day. I strap on my hip seat (otherwise I wouldn’t be able to hold him very long) and we walk around the garden watering our plants together.

Right now, he’s often more interested in the house or the hose than the plants themselves, which always makes me laugh.

Tent Reading Nook

I love creating spaces of imagination for my baby. This little tent has become the perfect reading nook. Inside I added soft blankets, plush toys, tiny fairy lights, and a basket of safe toys for him to explore.

Sometimes I sit inside with him and read books together. I also attached a small mobile to the top of the tent so it spins gently while we lay down inside. I’m excited to watch him grow into this space and eventually add his own favorite toys and little treasures.

Fairy Lights in His Living Room Play Area

One of my favorite details in our home is the fairy lights above his play area. They bring everything together and make the space feel calm and dreamy.

Our home has been completely transformed by the presence of our baby. What used to be a simple TV console has now become his little world—a tiny library, a reading chair, his small kitchen, and toys he can reach and explore. The fairy lights make the whole space feel even more magical.

Whimsy doesn’t have to be grand or elaborate. Most of the time it lives quietly inside ordinary moments—the smell of something baking in the oven, the sound of birds through an open window, a garden being watered in the afternoon light, or a cozy corner filled with books and fairy lights.

Becoming a mother has helped me slow down enough to notice these things again. Babies remind us how magical the world already is. My hope is that our home continues to be a place where curiosity, imagination, and simple joy are part of our everyday life. The days may look ordinary from the outside, but inside them are small storybook moments that make this season of motherhood feel truly special.
